Why Door Hinges Fail

uPVC and composite doors are heavy — and that weight is carried entirely by the hinges. Over time, the hinge pins wear, the fixing plates loosen, or the hinge body itself cracks or buckles. When this happens, the door starts to drop, sag, or bind against the frame. Left too long, the locking points stop aligning correctly and the door can no longer be properly secured.

Hinge failure is one of the most common reasons a door becomes difficult to close or lock — and one of the most straightforward fixes when caught early.

Signs Your Hinges Need Attention

  • Door drops or drags along the bottom of the frame
  • Stiff or grinding feeling when opening or closing
  • Visible gap on the hinge side when the door is closed
  • Door won't sit flush or lock properly
  • Hinge looks bent, cracked, or has worked loose from the frame

What I Do

  • Inspect all hinges and assess whether adjustment or replacement is needed
  • Supply and fit like-for-like or upgraded hinges
  • Check all locking points engage correctly before leaving
  • Advise on anything else spotted during the visit
Don't force a stiff door. Repeatedly forcing a door that's dropped or binding puts stress on the frame and the locking mechanism. What starts as a hinge job can quickly become a more expensive repair. Call me early and keep the cost down.
